The United States possesses such vast territory that it is overflowing with places worth visiting. The West Coast alone offers so many attractions that planning a travel route is never easy. In this post, based on a personal 20-day trip across the region, I will recommend optimized 1-week and 2-week itineraries.
This itinerary is designed for travelers who want to see as much as possible in a limited time, so the schedule is quite packed. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, I highly recommend adjusting the route to suit your style—perhaps by skipping one or two destinations to linger longer in your favorite spots.

US West Coast Travel Overview

For international travelers, the major gateways to the US West Coast are typically Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.
While Washington State, home to Seattle and the birthplace of Starbucks, boasts some of the most beautiful national parks and nature in the US, this guide focuses on California and the Grand Circle. This route is generally the most popular and offers relatively affordable flight options.
1-Week Itinerary
The Core California Route
San Francisco → Lake Tahoe → Yosemite → Sequoia → Los Angeles
This schedule is based on starting in San Francisco and driving south. However, if you are flying into Los Angeles, you can easily reverse this route.
Day 1: Arrival in San Francisco

Honestly, San Francisco doesn’t require a long stay; 1 night and 2 days is sufficient to see the highlights. On the first day, pick up your rental car at the airport, then head to Alcatraz Island and Pier 39 to look around while adjusting to the jet lag.
San Francisco: Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Lombard Street
Day 2: Sightseeing & Move to Lake Tahoe

Spend your morning briefly visiting Lombard Street, famous for the winding hill seen in the movie Inside Out, and the Golden Gate Bridge, the icon of San Francisco.
After an early lunch, depart San Francisco and drive about 4 hours to reach Lake Tahoe. Tahoe is an alpine lake famous for its beautiful emerald waters. End your day leisurely with a walk along the lakeshore in the evening.
Day 3: A Relaxing Day at Lake Tahoe

Dedicate Day 3 to fully enjoying Lake Tahoe. In the morning, enjoy cycling or walking around the lake. In the afternoon, get on the water with a kayak or paddleboard experience.
In summer, you can sunbathe at Emerald Bay or Sand Harbor; in winter, you can enjoy skiing. Wrap up the day by tasting local food at a nearby restaurant.
Lake Tahoe: Emerald Bay, Vikingsholm & Sand Harbor
Day 4: Move to Yosemite National Park & Hiking

Leave Lake Tahoe early in the morning and drive about 4 hours to arrive at Yosemite National Park. Yosemite is a representative US National Park, characterized by magnificent landscapes formed of granite.
You can hike in Yosemite Valley, or if you dislike climbing, you can drive to Glacier Point or Tunnel View to look down on El Capitan and Half Dome at a glance.

Day 5: Move to Sequoia National Park

Spend the morning in Yosemite, then drive about 4 hours to Sequoia National Park. Here, you must see the General Sherman Tree, the largest tree in the world by volume.
Walking the Congress Trail that starts from the Sherman Tree allows you to see giant sequoias and truly feel the greatness of nature. afterward, spend the night at accommodation near the National Park.

Day 6: Move to Los Angeles

Depart early from Sequoia National Park and drive about 3 hours to reach Los Angeles. Upon arrival, visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Dolby Theatre.
Spend a relaxed afternoon walking along Santa Monica Beach or Venice Beach. These spots are incredible for sunsets, so enjoy the view until the sun goes down before finishing your day.

Day 7: Los Angeles Tour & Departure

Start the last day of the trip with a visit to the Griffith Observatory. From here, you can see the panoramic view of downtown LA and the Hollywood Sign at a glance, and the science exhibits inside are also worth seeing.
Afterward, admire art at the Getty Center (which is free admission) or browse downtown shopping malls to wrap up your 1-week journey.

2-Week Itinerary
California & Grand Circle Route
San Francisco → Lake Tahoe → Yosemite → Sequoia → Los Angeles→ Las Vegas → Zion Canyon → Bryce Canyon → Grand Canyon
The 2-week course extends the 1-week California route by moving to Las Vegas and expanding into the “Grand Circle” of Utah and Arizona.
The 3 Major Canyons are considered top road trip destinations in the American West, each offering a unique landscape. This itinerary introduces a route where you stay near Zion National Park, then use Kanab as a base to visit Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon North Rim.
Day 8: Los Angeles to Las Vegas

Depart Los Angeles early in the morning to arrive in Las Vegas. If driving, it takes about 4 hours. Las Vegas is a world-class entertainment city. With flashy casinos and unique hotels clustered together, it is perfect for enjoying nightlife.
Day 9: Move to Zion Canyon & Hiking

Leave Las Vegas and drive about 3 hours to arrive at Zion National Park. Zion is famous for trails that follow the canyon and magnificent cliffs.
One of the most popular trails, Angels Landing, requires a permit obtained via a lottery system beforehand. However, the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, so I recommend challenging yourself if you get the chance.
Alternatively, The Narrows, a course where you walk through the river admiring the canyon rather than climbing a mountain, is a Zion specialty. Spend the day enjoying various trails according to your taste, and stay overnight in Springdale, right in front of the park.

Day 10: Move to Kanab & Local Sightseeing

Depart from Zion Canyon and move to Kanab, located about 1 hour away. Kanab sits right between Bryce Canyon and the Grand Canyon North Rim, making it the perfect base camp for travelers.
Kanab is nicknamed “Little Hollywood,” and the surrounding area is famous as a filming location for many movies. Settle into your accommodation in Kanab and leisurely explore the town, or visit the nearby Coral Pink Sand Dunes.

Day 11: Bryce Canyon

Drive about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Kanab to reach Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce is famous for Hoodoos, a unique terrain formed by rain and ice erosion.
Sunrise Point and Sunset Point are the representative viewpoints of Bryce Canyon, where you can see the canyon dyed in red light during sunrise or sunset.
You can explore between the Hoodoos by walking along the Navajo Loop and Queen’s Garden Trail. Spend the day at Bryce Canyon and return to Kanab for the night.

Day 12: Grand Canyon North Rim

Drive about 2 hours from Kanab to reach the Grand Canyon North Rim. The North Rim receives fewer visitors than the South Rim, allowing you to enjoy the grandeur of the Grand Canyon in a quieter atmosphere.
Bright Angel Point is the main viewpoint of the North Rim. A mere 5-minute walk from the parking lot allows you to feel the massive scale of the canyon. After checking out various viewpoints or trekking, return to Kanab to finish the day.
Winter Notice: The Grand Canyon North Rim is closed for winter (typically mid-October to mid-May).
If traveling in winter, visit the South Rim instead (open year-round). From Kanab, it is a longer drive (~3.5 hours one way), but it offers the most iconic views and facilities.

Day 13: Return to Las Vegas & Relaxation

Depart Kanab in the morning and return to Las Vegas. It takes about 3 hours. Spend the afternoon leisurely shopping, experiencing a casino, or swimming at your hotel pool.
In the evening, choose one of the top 3 Las Vegas shows (“O” Show, “KÀ” Show, Awakening) or enjoy the Bellagio Fountains and The Sphere to celebrate your dazzling final night in Vegas.
