Traveling from New York City to Niagara Falls is possible through various transportation options. In this post, I’ll introduce the main methods of getting there—flights, trains, buses, and tours—while diving into the details of taking an Amtrak train and how to cross the border by land via the Rainbow Bridge.

NYC to Niagara Falls Transport Options
1. Flight

The fastest way to travel from NYC to Niagara Falls is, of course, by plane. The flight time from NYC to Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) is about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
While it is fast, there are downsides. After arriving at Buffalo Airport, you still need to travel another 30–40 minutes by car, shuttle, or train to get to the falls. Plus, you have to deal with baggage check-ins and security lines.
2. Amtrak Train

The second method is taking the Amtrak train. The train departs from New York’s Penn Station and takes approximately 9 hours to reach Niagara Falls.
While 9 hours is a significant amount of time, the train offers distinct advantages: the seats are comfortable and spacious, and you can travel leisurely while enjoying the passing scenery.
Note: Amtrak runs direct trains three times a day, and ticket prices vary depending on when you book. I’ve summarized more details on this below.
3. Bus

The bus is one of the cheapest ways to get from NYC to Niagara. You can use various companies like Megabus or Greyhound.
The travel time is roughly 10 hours. However, if you choose an overnight schedule (departing at night and arriving in the morning), you can save on both time and accommodation costs. Of course, the fatigue from a long-distance bus ride is unavoidable.
4. Tour Packages

Finally, visiting Niagara Falls through a tour package is great because you don’t have to worry about transportation or scheduling. Tours usually include a guide and options to visit additional spots like wineries or outlets.
Although it is much more expensive than public transport, it might be the best choice if you are short on time but absolutely want to see Niagara. Just keep in mind that a day tour from NYC usually departs at 5:00 AM and returns after midnight.
Amtrak Train Travel Guide

You can book tickets via the official Amtrak website. When searching for Niagara Falls as your destination, you will see two options:
- NY (NFL): The station on the US side.
- ON (NFS): The station on the Canadian side.
The route that goes directly to Canada is the Maple Leaf line, which runs once a day, departing early in the morning (7:15 AM). Since it’s just across the bridge, the base fare is the same for both stations—starting at around $60 USD.
For the return trip from Niagara Falls to NYC, the fare is also $60 USD if booked in advance. However, if you buy tickets last minute, the price for a standard seat can jump up to $100 USD.

Pro Tip: Taking the train all the way to the Niagara Falls station in Canada has the advantage of clearing immigration right at the station. However, crossing the border on foot has a certain romantic “vibe” to it, so choose according to your preference!
- Departure: Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station (350 W 33rd St, New York, NY 10001, USA)
- US Arrival: Amtrak Niagara Falls Station (825 Depot Ave W, Niagara Falls, NY 14305, USA)
- Canada Arrival: Niagara Falls GO (4267 Bridge St, Niagara Falls, ON L2E 2R6, Canada)
Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

I wanted to experience crossing the border on foot, so I got off at the Niagara Falls station on the US side and headed to the Rainbow Bridge, where the border office is located.
Note: The bridge next to the station is the Whirlpool Bridge. This crossing is reserved for trains and vehicles with NEXUS or Global Entry passes only—you cannot walk across it.
The Rainbow Bridge is about 3 km south of the Niagara Falls train station. Walking takes about 30–40 minutes. It feels surprisingly far, so if you have heavy luggage, calling an Uber is a smart move.

When you first arrive at the Rainbow Bridge, you might be confused because it looks like it’s only for cars. However, if you pass the vehicle checkpoint, you will find a pedestrian entrance in the park area.
After completing a simple exit procedure on the US side, you can walk across the bridge. Since the Niagara River flowing below acts as the border between the US and Canada, you’ll see the flags of both nations side-by-side in the middle of the bridge.
At the start of the bridge, the angle for viewing the falls isn’t great. But as you get closer to the Canadian side, both the American Falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls come into full view.

Because you can’t capture the full scope of both falls at once from the US side, most tourists flock to Canada. Thanks to this, the Canadian side looks much more vibrant and developed.
Anyway, after enjoying the falls and the city night view while crossing, you finally reach the border office, get your passport stamped, and officially enter Canada!
Accommodation Recommendation

Since Niagara Falls is such a world-famous tourist destination, decent hotels can be quite expensive. I looked for an Airbnb as an alternative and found a gem.
I was exhausted after a 9-hour train ride from NYC followed by an hour of walking to cross the border. But as soon as I saw the condition of the accommodation, I was incredibly satisfied.

The room was clean and spacious, but the bathroom was even more impressive—it was huge! It had not only a shower booth but also a large bathtub, making it the perfect place to melt away travel fatigue.
The guest rooms are all on the second floor. I missed it when arriving at night, but the common area on the first floor was also clean and filled with natural light, giving it a cafe-like atmosphere. I didn’t take a photo, but the kitchen was fully equipped as well.

A simple breakfast including bread, fruit, energy bars, coffee, juice, and milk was included. Starting the day soaking in the morning sunlight there felt wonderful.
It takes less than 10 minutes to walk to the Rainbow Bridge or the main Niagara Falls strip, yet the accommodation is in a quiet residential area, making the location perfect. If you are looking for a place to stay in Niagara Falls, I highly recommend checking out options like this. (Feel free to ask for specific details in the comments!)
Final Thoughts
Today, I summarized how to get from NYC to Niagara Falls and how to cross the US-Canada border on foot via the Rainbow Bridge. While planes and buses are good options, if you want to enjoy a bit of romance and scenery, why not take a train trip via Amtrak?
