During my three-day trip to the UAE, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque left the deepest impression. With its frequent appearances in media and stunning photographs, my expectations were sky-high, and this magnificent mosque surpassed them. Let’s dive into the experience.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Overview
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in the UAE, is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first president of the UAE.
This architectural marvel features 82 domes, over 1,000 pillars, and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. Estimated construction costs reached a staggering $545 million USD. Built between 1996 and 2007, the mosque reflects an investment of over $695 millon USD in today’s value.
The white marble facade glows beautifully at sunset, and the illuminated reflections in the evening are breathtaking. Visiting around sunset is highly recommended to capture the mosque’s stunning transformation.

Getting There
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is conveniently located between the airport and downtown Abu Dhabi. Public buses like 24, 94, 401, and A10 provide easy access.

How to Reserve & Dress Code
Reservation Process
Admission is free, but prior booking is required. Simply visit the official reservation website and provide basic details such as the number of visitors, your preferred date and time, and personal information. Be sure to enter a valid email address, as the QR code required for entry will be sent to you via email.
Dress Code
As with most mosques, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has strict dress regulations:
- Prohibited: Shorts, sleeveless tops, body-hugging clothes, and sheer fabrics.
- Women: Must cover all parts of the body except the face.
Many female visitors rent abayas (traditional garments) on-site, as seen in the photo. When taking pictures, striking poses is not allowed; subtle gestures like holding a scarf or hat are acceptable.
Additionally, public displays of affection, bringing in food, or wearing religious/national symbols are strictly prohibited.
Visitor Experience
After getting off the bus, you’ll see a glass dome marking the entrance, which leads to an underground space that connects to the mosque.
The underground space, Souq Al Jami’, is a shopping center filled with luxury boutiques and restaurants. You can also rent or buy abayas here. It’s a great place to rest and cool off.
Before entering the mosque, there are washing areas for wudu, an Islamic purification ritual essential for physical and spiritual cleanliness before prayer.
Once inside, you’ll be awestruck by the grandeur. The mosque is covered entirely in white marble and gold, exuding a sense of reverence and wonder.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a true masterpiece of Islamic architecture, blending traditional design with modern engineering. Every single detail reflects the immense effort and artistry that went into its creation.
Domes and Minarets
The mosque has an impressive 82 domes, each unique in size and topped with crescent-shaped finials. The largest dome, sitting above the main prayer hall, represents the spiritual heart of the mosque. The four tall minarets, each standing 107 meters high, blend Mameluke, Ottoman, and Fatimid styles, beautifully showcasing a mix of traditional Islamic designs.
Columns and Pillars
There are 1,096 columns spread across the outdoor colonnades and prayer halls, each beautifully adorned with mother-of-pearl inlays and semi-precious stones like amethyst, lapis lazuli, and jasper. The intricate floral carvings on the columns are a testament to the incredible craftsmanship of the artisans who created them.
World’s Largest Carpet
Inside the prayer hall, you’ll find the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, covering 5,627 square meters and weighing a whopping 35 tons. Made by over 1,200 Iranian artisans, it took two years to finish and features stunning geometric and floral patterns that symbolize the unity between nature and spirituality.
Chandeliers
The mosque boasts seven breathtaking chandeliers, with the largest one in the main prayer hall. Measuring 10 meters in diameter and 15 meters tall, it’s one of the biggest in the world. Made with millions of Swarovski crystals and coated in 24-carat gold, these chandeliers add a touch of pure luxury and elegance.
Reflective Pools and Marble Work
The reflective pools surrounding the Sheikh Zayed grand mosque create a magical visual effect, especially at night when the lights make the domes and arches shimmer. The vast courtyard, one of the largest in the world, is paved with white marble and decorated with stunning floral mosaic designs, representing the cultural diversity of the Islamic world.
Calligraphy and Ornamentation
The walls, both inside and out, are adorned with gorgeous Arabic calligraphy featuring verses from the Quran. Created by talented calligraphers from the UAE, Syria, and Jordan, the geometric and floral patterns throughout the mosque highlight the Islamic values of balance and harmony.
Prayer Hall Ceiling and Walls
The ceiling of the prayer hall is a work of art, with intricate carvings and geometric patterns that add depth and texture to the space. The walls are decorated with marble panels inlaid with floral patterns, creating a soothing contrast against the cool white marble floors.

Dinner Break: McDonald’s and More
After hours of exploring, I grabbed a quick meal at the shopping center’s McDonald’s. A Big Mac meal costs about 26 AED, around 7 USD or 6.7 EUR. I tried the Mushroom Beef Signature meal with nuggets for 43 AED (~11.7 USD/11.1 EUR).
If you’re looking for a better dining experience, you’ll find plenty of options inside the shopping center. Beyond familiar fast-food chains like Burger King, Papa John’s, and Subway, there are also authentic local restaurants to explore.
