In this blog post, I’d like to share my experience traveling from Genoa, Italy, to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia. Surprisingly, Sardinia remains somewhat off the radar for many travelers, and even fewer choose to travel there by ferry. But traveling by ferry turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip, offering unique scenery and memorable moments. That’s why I’ve decided to share this detailed review, hoping to inspire and help fellow travelers considering their own Sardinia ferry adventure.

A short visit to Genoa (Genova), Italy

Genoa (Genova) is a historic port city located on Italy’s northwest coast, well-known as an industrial hub of Northern Italy, alongside Milan and Turin.
Initially, Genoa wasn’t on my travel itinerary at all. While researching transportation from Italy to Spain, I discovered a ferry route traveling from Sardinia to Barcelona. Intrigued by this convenient connection, I spontaneously decided to take the ferry from Genoa to Sardinia, and then onward to Spain.
I arrived in Genoa by train and immediately headed straight toward the city’s cruise and ferry terminal area. From my first impressions, Genoa had a noticeably modern feel, reminding me more of bustling Milan rather than southern Italian cities.
Genoa itself offers a fascinating cityscape; as the Apennine mountains seem to stretch directly into the sea, the buildings of Genoa climb dramatically up the hillside, creating a scenic view that’s remarkably distinct.
Genoa Port (Porto di Genova)

Genoa is one of Italy’s largest port cities. It’s not only a significant cargo port but also home to a huge cruise terminal often used as a docking point by MSC Cruises.
Right at the port, there was this massive structure that resembled something from a shopping mall or theme park. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a huge slide, descending from an incredible height, and the adjoining building wasn’t a hotel but a cruise ship cabin!
Well, as a budget traveler, it was just a distant dream. On my way to my ferry, I spotted another ferry to Sardinia operated by MOBY which was painted with a Looney Tunes theme—very eye-catching.
Genoa-Sardinia Ferry Information

Three ferry companies operate between Genoa and Sardinia: GNV, MOBY, and Tirrenia. However, Tirrenia is actually a subsidiary of Moby, so practically there are two options: GNV and MOBY. Ferries departing Genoa go mainly to two northern Sardinian ports—Porto Torres (northwest) and Olbia (northeast).
Typical ferry travel duration is between 11 to 14 hours depending on the weather.
- Genoa-Porto Torres (Tirrenia): operates year-round
- Genoa-Olbia (MOBY): 16 April 2025 — 2 November 2025
- Genoa-Porto Torres (GNV): 5 May 2025 — 11 October 2025
- Genoa-Olbia (GNV): 17 May 2025 — 10 October 2025
Usually departures happen overnight, arriving in Sardinia by early morning. Passengers can book cabins equipped with beds, private bathrooms, and showers—very comfortable for one-night stays. The GNV ferry I chose even offered cheaper bunk-bed tickets similar to hostel dorm beds, providing budget-friendly sleeping arrangements.
From my experience, choosing just a deck ticket without reserved seating isn’t bad either. Since the ferry itself is huge (almost cruise-ship size), there are plenty of open spaces. Many travelers simply lie down in lobbies to sleep overnight. Considering sleeping cabins cost 2 to 3 times the price, if you are traveling on a tight budget, simply booking a deck ticket can be a sensible option.
Boarding my GNV Ferry to Sardinia

The ferry I booked was operated by GNV, and honestly, its size impressed me. I had intended to walk from the railway station to my dock as it wasn’t far away, but due to taking the wrong road, it took almost an hour.
Interestingly, even though this was domestic travel within Italy, foreigners had to present passports and undergo security screening. It felt almost as if I was leaving the country!
After completing the boarding process, I finally stepped onto the ferry and glanced up at the deck, where passengers were already enjoying the view of the city.

My Sardinia Ferry Experience

As soon as I boarded, I encountered a cheerful Italian family relaxing together. Later an Italian friend glanced at my photo and instantly said “this atmosphere is typically Italian vacation style.”
Sailing out, the view of ships docked along the harbor, buildings on the cliffs, and steam rising from other ferries approaching created a strangely nostalgic mood.
Leaving port provided great panoramic views of Genoa’s cityscape, including the iconic dome of an Italian cathedral—a sight common throughout Italy and always charming.
The Mediterranean Sea has a color so clear and vivid that mere words like “clean and clear” don’t seem enough. It possesses a unique, deep blue shade, yet incredibly transparent at the same time.
Ferry Facilities: Lobby & Restaurants

The ferry’s interior was surprisingly spacious and well-equipped, resembling a cruise ship rather than a typical ferry. I booked a cabin ticket since the journey was around 13 hours, but many others simply slept sprawled across sofas or benches in the lobby area.
The ship had an arcade, various restaurants, a bar, and I believe even a casino. Initially, I thought the deck seemed quite empty, but it turned out everyone was gathered indoors around these amenities.
Feeling famished after a long day without food, I first checked out a restaurant onboard. However, even considering the location at sea, the prices of the spaghetti dishes seemed excessively high for Italy—so I skipped this place.
Luckily, there was another dining option—a food-court-style restaurant where you pick whatever dish you want and pay for each item separately. Here I got some reasonable food options, including “Ichnusa,” a local Sardinian beer—something I couldn’t miss out on.
Sunset on the Ferry

After dinner, the sun started to set beautifully. I stepped out onto the deck for some fresh air and to enjoy the sunset view. Here, I came upon an elderly couple and a mother with her daughter peacefully watching the horizon.
If anyone asks me to define what happiness looks like, I might just show them this moment—everyone aboard seemed genuinely happy, enjoying the sunset views from the ferry.

Yet strangely, instead of fully relaxing, I kept noticing mechanical equipment installed at the stern deck, instantly reminding me of my military days in the Navy. This association made things slightly bittersweet for me personally.
Nevertheless, apart from my brief nostalgic moment, everyone else aboard appeared genuinely joyful—or at least very content—as we cruised toward Sardinia. Indeed, the sunset moment from this ferry ride will surely linger in my memory for a long time.
Final Thoughts
My unexpected ferry journey from Genoa to Sardinia turned out to be one of the most memorable highlights of my Italian travels. It offered the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and scenic beauty, and truly added something unique and authentic to the entire experience. Beyond the usual landmarks and attractions, sometimes spontaneous choices like these become the most cherished aspects of travel.
If you’re planning your own Italy itinerary, I highly recommend taking this ferry route—it’s budget-friendly if you go for deck seating, and even more comfortable if you opt for a cabin. Plus, traveling by ferry is not only practical but provides unforgettable Mediterranean sunset views and authentic glimpses into local life aboard.
As I continue my journey, I leave Genoa behind with warm memories and anticipation for Sardinia, my next adventure. Stay tuned for more travel stories!
