Porto Torres Sardinia Travel Guide: Best Beaches, Hidden Spots, and Tips

Spiaggia di Balai beach with colorful umbrellas and clear blue water in Porto Torres, Sardinia

Finally, here we are—the grand finale of my journey through Italy: Sardinia (Sardegna). I still vividly remember that mesmerizing emerald-colored ocean. A sea so clear and pristine it almost seemed unreal. The superb sunny weather was the icing on the cake, perfect for swimming and relaxing on the beach. Sardinia was a spontaneous visit without much planning, yet it completely captivated me. I’m now officially a Sardinia enthusiast. Let me show you exactly what made me fall for this hidden gem!

About Sardinia (Sardegna)

Sardinia, or Sardegna in Italian, is the second-largest island in Italy, after Sicily. Located to the west of the Italian peninsula, it’s famed for its stunningly colorful coastline and natural landscapes.

It’s surprisingly larger than you’d imagine—covering an area of 24,090 km², comparable to small European countries like Slovenia (20,271 km²) or North Macedonia (25,713 km²). The biggest city in the south is Cagliari, whereas the north is dotted with cities like Sassari and Olbia.

Getting here is relatively convenient thanks to three airports (Cagliari, Olbia, Alghero), plus ferry services from various mainland ports. Choose whichever fits your schedule and budget!

  • Civitavecchia (Rome) → Olbia
  • Naples → Cagliari
  • Genoa → Porto Torres

Sardinia Ferry from Genoa: Routes, Schedule And Review

Porto Torres, Sardinia

My main purpose for visiting Sardinia was to catch a ferry onwards to Barcelona, so I chose Porto Torres, located on the island’s northwestern coast.

The town itself is conveniently adjacent to the ferry terminal. Perfect for travelers with short visits (I had one night here), Porto Torres offers a charming, quaint atmosphere.

One of the best things about Porto Torres was the beautiful seaside promenade. You can easily stroll along this coastal road, appreciating the views, flowers, crystal-clear waters, and unique coastal cliffs shaped by natural erosion.

About 15 to 20 minutes on foot from downtown Porto Torres, there’s a small picturesque beach. However, since I wasn’t prepared for swimming at that point, I decided to continue walking.

Coastal Promenade Walk in Porto Torres

Discover breathtaking hidden beaches, stunning geological wonders, crystal-clear waters, and historic landmarks by walking the spectacular coastal promenade in Porto Torres. Here’s your complete guide to the best sights and hidden spots along the coastline.

Hidden Beach: Spiaggia dello Scoglio Ricco

If the main beaches in Porto Torres feel too crowded, continue strolling eastward along the scenic coastline. You’ll soon discover hidden beaches tucked neatly between dramatic cliffs.

From afar, these secluded coves look intimate and inviting—a perfect escape for privacy seekers. I briefly explored one of these hidden beaches but respectfully withdrew after noticing a couple enjoying their solitude.

Il Ponte: Natural Stone Bridge & Snorkeling Spot

Il Ponte, the natural arch formation with transparent waters and coastal rocks in Porto Torres, Sardinia

Continuing your walk, you’ll encounter dramatic rock formations and remarkably transparent waters. The clarity of the sea allows stunning views of the ocean floor, despite its intimidating depth.

Further along, unique geological formations showcase nature’s artistry. One such location, known locally as “Il Ponte” (“The Bridge” in Italian), features a striking natural rock bridge sculpted by centuries of erosion.

  • Activities: Sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling are popular here.
  • Tip: Bring sun protection—there is limited shade along this stretch of coast, especially under the strong summer sun.

Grotto dell’Inferno

Not far from Il Ponte, you’ll find the Grotto dell’Inferno (“Hell Cave”), a fascinating karst-like cave situated at the end of a dramatic gorge. Keep in mind this cave is accessible only from the sea.

I even noticed an adventurous fisherman attempting to fish near the grotto, though judging by his empty bucket, the area’s fishing potential might not be particularly fruitful!

  • Interesting Fact: Nearby, you’ll also spot ancient rock dwellings carved directly into the cliffs, offering an intriguing glimpse of Porto Torres’ historical legacy.

Chapel and the Hidden Cave

Cala Porcheddu, stunning coastal hidden cave and turquoise waters

At the end of the coastal walk stands an unusual yet charming chapel overlooking the sea. While its historical background might not be immediately apparent, visitors primarily seek out this location to glimpse the mysterious hidden cave known as Cala Porcheddu (“Little Pig Cove” in the local northern Sardinian dialect, Sassarese). The origin of this peculiar name remains a mystery.

Although the viewpoint behind the chapel offers beautiful views of the cave and coastline, navigating through dense vegetation to reach it isn’t the most enjoyable experience.

  • Insider Tip: Consider renting a kayak or canoe instead, as paddling directly into Cala Porcheddu reveals a beautiful hidden beach with natural shade—your own private paradise.

Spiaggia di Balai: The Best Beach in Porto Torres

After exploring the coastal promenade, I recommend ending your adventure at the magnificent Spiaggia di Balai, Porto Torres’ most beloved beach.

It’s easy to understand why this beach is so popular:

  • Crystal-clear emerald waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling
  • Gentle sandy shores ideal for relaxing and sunbathing
  • Conveniently located near Porto Torres’ town center, attracting locals and tourists alike

Without a doubt, Spiaggia di Balai stands out as one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever visited. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this captivating spot for yourself!
