Mountain trail to Untersberg summit with cross and hikers

If you’re planning a trip to Salzburg, Austria, let me introduce you to what was, for me personally, the most unforgettable spot in the region: Untersberg. Located not far from the city center, Untersberg offers visitors a chance to experience the grandeur of the Alps up close. I highly recommend visiting! Even better, Hellbrunn Palace is conveniently located along the same travel route, making it easy to enjoy both attractions in a single day. Here’s a detailed guide to making the most of your day at Untersberg and Hellbrunn, packed with practical information and tips!

Untersberg

Untersberg is a majestic mountain straddling the border between Salzburg, Austria, and Bavaria, Germany. It stands out as the perfect destination for nature lovers and hikers visiting Salzburg.

Just about 10 kilometers from the city center, Untersberg is easily accessible by public transportation, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals. You can reach Untersberg directly from Salzburg’s main train station by taking either Bus 25 or 5—no transfers needed. The journey takes about 35 to 40 minutes.

The Untersberg Cable Car

Once you arrive at Grödig, you’ll find the Untersbergbahn cable car, in operation since 1961. The cable car makes it possible for everyone—from casual sightseers to serious hikers—to enjoy the summit.

If you’re into hiking, there’s a trail up the north face of the mountain. It’s the fastest hiking route, but you do need a bit of experience.

The cable car itself leaves from the lower station and takes you up to the upper station at an elevation of 1,777 meters (about 5830 ft), gaining nearly 1,300 meters of altitude in just 8 minutes and 20 seconds. The panoramic view of the Alps is breathtaking, but be warned—the ride is quite thrilling as you soar over dramatic cliffs!

Hiking on Untersberg

While the cable car makes access easy, Untersberg is also a paradise for hikers. The most popular route is from the upper cable car station to Salzburger Hochthron, a summit you can reach in about 30 minutes—an easy trail, even for beginners.

The entire Untersberg area is a nature reserve, with well-preserved flora and helpful information signs about local plants. Finding and identifying the flowers and trees along the trail adds to the enjoyment.

Take your time hiking—the course is short, so you can enjoy the scenery and plant life at a relaxed pace. At the summit, don’t miss the guide plaques describing the surrounding landscape, and discover the local dwarf legends that add a whimsical touch to the mountain’s lore.

If you prefer a lighter hike, simply walking from the upper cable car station to the nearby cross gives you spectacular views and is worth it even for non-hikers.

Hellbrunn Palace

Hellbrunn Palace (Schloss Hellbrunn) was built in 1616 as the summer residence for Salzburg’s Archbishop Markus Sittikus. The gardens blend natural beauty and meticulous landscaping with statues, ponds, and vibrant flowers, creating a peaceful retreat.

The palace itself now serves as a museum. While the interiors are lavishly decorated—befitting a palace—there isn’t much to see inside compared to the gardens and attractions outside.

Trick Fountains (Wasserspiele)

The main attraction of the Hellbrunn Palace is the iconic Trick Fountains (Wasserspiele). Designed by the archbishop to play pranks on guests, these fountains surprise visitors with unexpected jets of water from hidden spots—an entertaining and unique experience.

  • The fountains operate only at scheduled times and can be visited as part of a guided tour. As spaces are limited, be sure to reserve your spot as soon as you arrive.
  • The first stop is a table where water jets suddenly spurt out from under every seat—except the archbishop’s! Imagine the guests’ faces when pranked by their host.

When I visited, it was raining, which actually made the surprise fountains even more unpredictable—the wet ground gave no hints about where the hidden jets would pop up! Don’t worry though; the experience is designed more for laughter than getting drenched. People of all ages find it absolutely hilarious, and you’ll only get lightly sprayed—just enough to spark some giggles.

Sound of Music Pavilion

Fans of “The Sound of Music” won’t want to miss the famous gazebo (pavilion) located in the Hellbrunn gardens, a beloved photo spot from the film. The garden is open to the public for free.
